Christian Academy Class Highlights
This
is a sampling of the classes offered through our tutorial based upon annual interest levels.
ACT
Preparation
– This upper-level course helps prepare students to take the
standardized
test. This is a
one-semester course.
Advanced
Biology
–
This upper-level course is an in-depth study of human anatomy and
physiology.
Biology is a prerequisite.
Advanced
Math
–
This upper-level course prepares the student for college math and
includes
trigonometry and calculus functions.
Algebra
I
– This
course includes equation-solving, graphing, polynomials, radicals, and
quadratic functions.
Algebra
II
– This
course reviews basic algebraic functions and introduces more advanced
operations including exponential functions,logarithms, and trigonometry. Algebra I is a
prerequisite.
American
History
– This
upper-level course utilizes both historical documents and historical
literature
as students explore America from its beginning to today.
American
Literature
– As students read all genres from American Literature, they
will learn to
analyze and write about what they read.
Art
I (grades 7-8)
- This course provides exposure to a wide range of drawing, painting,
and mixed-media projects and also offers exposure to art
history and theory in
support of the projects.
Art
II (grades 9-12)
- This course provides exposure to a wide range of drawing, painting,
and mixed-media projects and also offers exposure to art
history and theory in
support of the projects.
Biology – This course includes
cellular biology, microbiology, genetics, botany, zoology, and human
anatomy. Students
participate in a variety of exciting labs and other activities.
British
Literature
– This upper-level survey course makes a chronological
exploration of British
Literature in all genres. Students
will
write extensively about what they read.
Chemistry
– This upper-level course presents students with a foundation
in
atomic structure, nomenclature, electrochemistry, thermodynamics, and
much more. Students
participate in numerous in-class lab opportunities.
Cognitive Enrichment -
Introduction
to Computers – (grades 7-8) - This
class introduces students to the computer and its components.
Students will learn the hardware components of the
computer (CPU, Hard Drive, Monitor, etc.) as well as
the
software components of the computer (memory, folders, operating system,
system tools, etc.). Students will also be introduced to some
software tools: word processing, paint tools, etc. Students must have a laptop to take this class.
Introduction
to Computer Programming – (grades 9-12)
- This class in an introduction to computer programming languages. The student
will begin using a programming language called LOGO and create animation
projects. Students must have a laptop to take this class.
Drama
(grades 7-8) - This
course is a performance-based class.
Students will end the year with a full-length
production.
Drama
(grades 9-12) - This
course is a performance-based class with additional emphasis on the
history and theory of the theater.
Students will end the year with a full-length
production.
Earth
Science
– Students explore God’s wonderful creation
including both outer space and the world around us.
Student activities include many hands-on
experiences.
English
7, 8, 9, 10
– These classes meet for 1 ½ hours per week and
include grammar, vocabulary, writing, and literature.
Geography
– This exciting course allows students to develop mapping
skills
and to explore world cultures and landforms through a variety
ofactivities and reading assignments.
Government/Economics – These two upper-level,
one-semester courses are required for graduation.
The goal of the U.S. government
course is to help students to
understand world issues, to identify the rights and obligations of
citizens,
and to become active participants in the democratic process.
The economics
course emphasizes the basic principles of production, consumption, and
distribution of goods and services in the United States and a
comparison with
those of other countries.
Junior High Math -
This course prepares the seventh grade student for pre-algebra.
It includes
emphasis on fractions, decimals, and percentages.
Life
Science
– This course explores
life processes including concepts in microbiology, plant biology, and
zoology.
Medieval Cultures - 7th grade
history
Physical
Science
– This fun-filled,
hands-on course introduces students to the scientific method,
introductory
chemistry, and basic physics concepts.
Pre-Algebra – This
course prepares students for Algebra I by
introducing basic algebraic concepts.
Public
Speaking (grades 9-12) - This introductory course
provides a study of basic concepts of speech communication as applied
to public
speaking including both social and academic settings.
Students will learn practical speaking skills
from personal
introductions, to speech-making, to debating.
Spanish
I
– This introductory course
includes practical vocabulary, conversational Spanish, and grammatical
formations.
Spanish
II
– This more advanced course
builds on the principles introduced in Spanish I.
Spanish I is a prerequisite for this course.
World
History I
– This survey course
examines the history of the world from creation
through the Reformation. Students
are
engaged by intriguing reading and exciting projects.
World
History II
– This second world history course begins with the
Reformation and
continues to present day.
Yearbook/Newspaper –
Students in this class will be responsible for designing and publishing
the LCA
yearbook. This is a
wonderful elective
for the college-bound transcript. |
